One Millers Court
One Millers Court was unlike any other residence of 1888, and life would never be the same again for those who visited one morning that winter. A feeling of emptiness now filled the room; all that could be heard was crackling from the dying embers of the previous evening’s fire. On the street outside, a muffled discussion could be heard about bloodhounds.
Eleven hours earlier, energy had filled the room as a beautiful blonde young woman had danced and sung “A Violet from Mother’s Grave” in a loud Irish accent. Her fair complexion and blue eyes could just be made out in the mirror sitting on top of the mantelpiece due to her low centre of gravity and robust figure.
An odour filled the air. It was so strong it burnt the nostrils and completely wiped out the smell from the earlier fire. It was the kind of foul stench that filled the room with flies and attracted rats. A pair of boots sat in front of the fireplace, and the young woman’s clothes sat on a chair perfectly folded beside the door. Throughout the morning, an unknown number of faces had peered in the small window on the far side of the room, only to scream and run off or remain glued to the spot, terrified in fear.
On the bed lay the young woman; she was no longer full of energy, laughing, dancing or beautiful. All of that had been taken from her one cold winter morning in London. She would never again sing due to the fact that her thorax had been cut open. The sheets were saturated in blood, as well as the bedstead nearest the door, which contained two-thirds of her remains. It appeared she had been mutilated by a surgeon’s knife on the bedstead for several hours and then moved to her final resting position in the middle of the bed.
A once pretty young girl now had no face. Her nose, ears, cheeks, lips and chin had either been partially removed or mutilated with a series of lacerations. The majority of her internal organs were lying on top of the bedstead. Even her breasts had been removed. This was all that remained of Mary Jane Kelly, the final victim of Jack the Ripper.
